Who I Am and Why I Founded Bear Roots Studio

My name is Jamie, and I grew up in a farming community in North Yorkshire, surrounded by people who worked the land. For 21 years, that was my world. Later, I spent nearly 9 years in the Scottish Highlands, working on highland estates and immersing myself in a landscape shaped by tourism, nature, and conservation. Those experiences rooted something deep in me: a love for rural life and a respect for the people who make it possible.

I studied Countryside Management, then Forest and Woodland Management, and eventually Forest and Nature Conservation. Every qualification was another step towards understanding how rural landscapes work, how they sustain communities, and how fragile that balance can be. My heart has always been in the countryside, and whenever I could, I found work that kept me close to it.

But here’s what I also saw during those years: rural businesses struggling, not because they weren’t good at what they did, but because they simply couldn’t reach enough customers. I watched farmers barely make ends meet through traditional methods alone. I saw brilliant estate managers, accommodation providers, and small producers working incredibly hard but still facing an uphill battle just to survive. And the reason? Geography. Fewer people within a five-mile radius. Less footfall. Less visibility.

That never sat right with me.

Why should a rural business struggle simply because it’s not in a town or city? Why should location determine whether a great business thrives or just scrapes by? It shouldn’t. Rural businesses deserve the same opportunities to grow as their urban counterparts, and I believe they can get there through strategic thinking that blends the traditional with the digital. Those two worlds don’t have to be separate. In fact, I think there’s a harmony between them that can genuinely help rural businesses build sustainable, diversified income streams and reach the customers they need.

Right now, I’m working in a warehouse in the Netherlands. It’s not where I imagined I’d be, but it’s taught me something important: sometimes you have to take a different path to build what matters. Bear Roots Studio is my way of reconnecting with rural communities and the work I’m passionate about, while helping rural businesses grow wherever they’re based.

What I Want to Achieve with Bear Roots Studio

My goal is straightforward: I want to help rural businesses grow with deep roots and long-term sustainability. I want to work with the people who make rural life possible, the ones who are doing everything right but just aren’t getting the customer traffic they need to thrive.

I work with rural businesses wherever they’re based. Whether you’re running a farm that’s diversifying into agritourism, managing a highland estate, operating a rural accommodation business, or producing food, crafts, or experiences rooted in the land, I’m here to help you build a stronger online presence that brings in customers from both your local area and further afield.

Because here’s what I know: rural businesses often need to cast a wider net than urban ones. Your customers might not all live within walking distance, but they will travel for quality, authenticity, and experiences they can’t get anywhere else. My job is to make sure they can find you when they’re looking.

I believe in strategic, sustainable growth. Not flashy promises or overnight transformations, but thoughtful plans that work in harmony with how you already run your business. Digital marketing and web design aren’t separate from the work you do; they’re extensions of it. They’re tools that help you reach the people who need what you offer, and they’re most effective when they’re built on solid foundations, just like everything else in life.

Bear Roots Studio exists because I want to be part of rural communities again, and I want to help those communities grow. Not by changing who they are, but by giving them the visibility and tools they need to thrive in a modern world without losing sight of their values.

Growing Responsibly

Sustainability isn’t just something I talk about – it’s something I’m actively working towards. I’ll be honest: Bear Roots Studio isn’t where I want it to be environmentally yet, but I’m committed to getting there, and I’m taking deliberate steps in that direction.

Right now, I’m building a tool stack that prioritises green and environmentally conscious providers wherever possible. From hosting to software, I’m looking at the environmental impact of the services I use and choosing providers who share similar values. But I also know that not every piece of software comes from a company with strong environmental practices, and I’m not willing to compromise on the quality of service I provide to my clients.

For those tools and services that don’t meet the environmental standards I’d like, I’m committed to offsetting that impact. I’ll be partnering with tree planting organisations in the UK and Europe to ensure that the work I do contributes positively to the environment, even when the tools I use don’t. The specifics are still being finalised, but this commitment is non-negotiable.

Looking ahead, my goal is for Bear Roots Studio to become carbon neutral, and eventually carbon positive. I’m realistic about this: meaningful environmental change takes time, investment, and careful planning. It’s not something that happens overnight, and I’d rather be honest about where we are and where we’re heading than make promises I can’t keep.

What matters to me is that every decision I make for this business considers its environmental impact. The countryside has given me so much, and helping rural businesses thrive shouldn’t come at the expense of the land they depend on. Growing responsibly means building a business that supports rural communities while respecting the environment that sustains them.
